Global Consultation Meeting on COP29 Held with the Participation of More Than 80 NGOs from Around the World

A global consultation meeting titled “How Civil Society Organizations Can Participate in COP29” was organized by the “Support to Health” Public Association. The online meeting was attended by about 80 representatives of environmental and health-oriented NGOs, climate experts, universities, and think tanks from different countries around the world - the USA, Canada, Great Britain, Moldova, Russia, Albania, Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Nigeria, Kenya, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Indonesia, Chad, etc., as well as from Azerbaijan, and they shared their views on the expectations regarding the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) to be held in Azerbaijan. During the meeting, Parvana Valiyeva, Executive Director of the Public Union for Health Care, clarified the registration issues necessary for NGOs to participate in COP events, spoke about the contribution that organizations can make to the climate change negotiations held within the framework of the event, and the procedures for obtaining observer status, which is necessary for participation. Also participating in the meeting was Ms. Kripa Dwarakanath, Senior Specialist of GHD, a global, multidisciplinary professional services network operating in the UK that offers solutions to the world's biggest problems in the fields of water, energy and communities, and made a presentation on COP28 and future prospects, noting that increasing countries' financial investments in sustainability plays a major role in the implementation of nationally determined contributions (NDCs). Uzodinma Adirieje, Head of the AHOA-Afrihealth Optonet Association, a global think tank specializing in health and environmental issues, said at the meeting that it would be appropriate for NGOs to unite under one platform and support the common process on the way to COP29. Opportunities should be created for representatives of countries that suffer the most from climate change (loss and damage suffered countries) to participate in the event and negotiations. Inclusivity should be taken into account in the composition of the delegation to COP29, and the participation of youth, women, as well as people with disabilities, and indigenous people should be ensured. It was decided to hold Global Consultations of NGOs on the next COP every month and to prepare an event report and submit it to the COP29 President. The promotional video about Azerbaijan broadcast at the event aroused the sympathy of the participants. The event continued with speeches by climate change experts and representatives of civil society organizations on their expectations from COP29.
